In 2021, Pivotal London helped over 450 digital marketing and media professionals find a new role, this Salary Guide is based on the analysis of these permanent and contract placements, with a particular focus on data in the final 3-6 months.

The Salary Guide covers roles in both Agencies and In-house marketing teams both on a permanent and freelance basis.


2021 Headlines:

  • 2021 saw a record-breaking volume of jobs being created in Digital Marketing and Media, as the market bounced back strongly from the pandemic.
  • At Pivotal, we saw demand outstrip pre-covid (2019) levels by 24%
  • Vacancy growth softened slightly in November and December, though overall demand for staff remained robust
  • Candidate availability is at an all-time low and it’s widely accepted that there is an even larger skills shortage in the Digital Industry
  • A record number of candidates left their roles in Q3 to start new jobs
  • This is driving Salary Inflation – a recent Pivotal survey found candidates are looking for a 15-25% payrise to move
  • The biggest % increases in Year-on-Year salaries are in the junior>mid-level  (0.5-3 Years’ experience cohorts)
  • All indicators point to 2022 being a difficult year and that staff shortages are a challenge that will outlive the pandemic as an economic issue
  • These trends are likely to continue for some time and put pressure on operating costs and ability to expand
